Hand Wraps

Like a mouthguard, hand wraps are part of every Thai boxer’s essential equipment. Traditionally, these were made of hemp, and their rough shape was designed to increase the force of the punches. Today, hand wraps are usually made of cotton, which has many advantages. Firstly, the basic protective function of the bandages is retained, as they protect your ankles and wrists just as well as the original when wrapped correctly. In addition, hands wrapped in bandages can be used to wipe the sweat from your eyes during training. Boxing bandages can also play a supporting role in your punches. Due to their stabilizing effect, you can wear them throughout your entire training. Burpees or the good old partner exercise – the wheelbarrow – can put as much strain on your wrists as a few powerful punches against a hard-punching bag.

There are many ways to wrap your bandages around your hands; they all have advantages and disadvantages. Some methods focus more on the ankles, while others mainly affect the wrist. It’s best to try this out at home. The ability to apply your hand wraps quickly is an essential skill that every Thai boxer should internalize quickly. If you need some time to wrap your bandages at the beginning, it is best to come to your classes 5 minutes early to wrap them without any time pressure. With all techniques, it is important not to tie the bandages too tightly and thus disrupt the blood flow. However, they should also be tight enough to support your joints properly throughout your training and not fall off your hands. Talk to us at the gym if you need help finding the right technique.

Hand wraps protect, support, and reliably absorb sweat.

Bandages are available in different lengths. It is best to try out which best suits your wrapping technique. Longer hand wraps, for example, are ideal for wrapping your hands exceptionally high up to the forearms. This way, you can ensure excellent stabilization. Shorter ones are quicker to wrap and can be changed quickly if necessary. Fortunately, boxing bandages are not particularly expensive. Therefore, we suggest buying at least two pairs of them. This way, you have a fresh pair ready to hand for every class and can change them during training if necessary. Hand wraps are exceptionally absorbent due to their cotton fabric and usually dripping wet after training. That’s why they should be washed, aired, and dried thoroughly.

Our pro tip: Always wash your boxing bandages together in a closed laundry bag in the machine! If you forget to do this once, you will usually spend much time trying to remove the rest of the laundry from your wraps afterward. The tangling of hand bandages is a well-known annoyance, but a laundry bag helps a lot here. Also, close the Velcro fastener with itself before washing so that the scratchy surfaces don’t rub your bandages and make them porous over time.
