Muay Thai Shorts
When one begins to take an interest in the tradition-rich Muay Thai, the particularly striking shorts of the fighters quickly catch one’s eye. These famous Muay Thai shorts are unique to the Thai national sport and do not appear in any other sport. They have been worn with pride and respect in fights for centuries and are an extraordinary distinguishing feature, just like a soccer jersey. However, it’s worth paying attention to some details when buying your Muay Thai shorts.
First of all, wearing Muay Thai shorts during your training at the Ringside Gym© is not mandatory. As a beginner, you can also opt for a similar type of shorts. However, it should indeed be shorts or at least a very short pair of pants. In Muay Thai, your entire legs serve as both offensive and defensive tools. Therefore, this area should not be covered with too much fabric. Another important criterion is the freedom of leg movement, which should be guaranteed during your training. Particularly legendary in Muay Thai are high kicks and knee strikes aimed at the upper body. Therefore, when training with conventional short sports shorts, you must ensure that the movements are easy for you and that neither the fabric nor the cut impedes or bothers you in any way.
Our Muay Thai Starter Kits are a good starting point, which includes everything you need for your first training session with us.
The right model
Nowadays, there are also a variety of short training pants suitable for Muay Thai training. Currently, various styles of MMA shorts are popular. These can offer similar comfort and often score points with their high durability. However, it is essential to ensure that no sharp-edged patches or Velcro fasteners are sewn on the outside of the pants, which could pose an unnecessary risk of injury.
Another significant function of the classic Muay Thai sports shorts is to prevent heat buildup between the skin and the shorts. Anyone who has visited Thailand or similar tropical countries can surely imagine that intense training such as Muay Thai should be carried out with as little clothing as possible. Although we rarely face such high temperatures in Germany, we guarantee that Muay Thai with us will make you sweat a lot. Therefore, pay attention to good ventilation in your training shorts. However, all female participants can still confidently choose sports leggings. As already mentioned, we don’t impose any strict rules in this regard.
Also, ensure that the Muay Thai shorts provide enough room to wear a jockstrap (groin guard). This is essential during partner training and especially during sparring, and is therefore highly recommended!
There are, of course, many variants of traditional Muay Thai shorts. However, some modern types overdo things a little in terms of decoration. Therefore, we recommend paying attention to ensure that the design of the shorts is not too elaborate. Often, they are brimming with glittering patches and appliques. While these may look spectacular, their inflexible nature often hinders the flow of movement.
Moreover, these beautifully embroidered shorts tend to wear out faster. Loose, thin threads can also present an additional risk of injury, where a training partner might accidentally get caught. Some models also have a vast waistband, which can extend above the belly button depending on your body size, thus potentially hindering breathing. In the best case, your Muay Thai shorts should not be a burden during your training and should, therefore, be made of exceptionally light and, ideally, moisture-repellent satin fabric. While embellishments are nice to look at, it’s vital to stay moderate in practice. Often, the simpler versions are the far more practical ones.
Proper Care
Over time, you must acquire more than one pair of shorts for your daily training. As already hinted, Muay Thai is particularly sweat-inducing. Therefore, changing your shorts for each class or washing them beforehand is advisable. Appearing for training in fresh sports clothing is not only an important aspect of hygiene but also a sign of respect towards your training partners. When machine washing, using a laundry bag is generally beneficial. This allows you to clean your Muay Thai shorts in a regular wash cycle without any problems. If your Muay Thai shorts have many finely embroidered embellishments and elaborate patterns, you better use classic hand washing.
